36 people have died in a flood and landslide caused by heavy rains in the southeastern state of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

In the television and social media broadcasts from the city of São Soustiao, houses and land swept away by the flood, motor cars falling into the river, broken highways and fallen trees can be seen. The state government said that 35 people lost their lives in that city. Government officials said that a girl died in Ubatuba city as well.
In the northern coastal area of Sao Paulo city, 228 people were left homeless and 328 people were relocated to safe places. Officials have not given information about those who were lost or injured in the flash flood.

Sao Paulo State Governor Tarcisio de Freitas has declared a state of emergency in five coastal cities after inspecting the flood-affected areas. In addition, he has released 1.5 million US dollars for rescue and relief. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is scheduled to visit the flood-affected areas today.
