Do obese people have heart disease? This is a question that arises in the mind of many. Cardiologist Dr. Rajendra Koju’s answer is, ‘There is a risk.’

Risk of heart disease

So what is the relationship between obesity and heart disease? Is there no heart risk for thin people? Dr. working in Dhulikhel Hospital. Koju says, ‘Being fat increases the load on the heart’s function. Especially, the amount of cholesterol in the body increases and accumulates in the blood vessels and narrows the veins. It makes it difficult for the heart to pump.’

An article was published in Harvard Health Publishing, ‘Is obesity linked to heart disease?’ In the title. Accordingly, fat around the stomach can be a health hazard. The Journal of the American Heart Association conducted a study on this topic. About five hundred thousand people between the ages of 40 and 69 participated in the study conducted in the UK. Among the participants, those who were obese were found to have heart disease and heart attacks. According to the study, women had more heart attacks than men.

Another similar study was conducted on January 21, 2020. According to the study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, those who have excess fat around their waist are at risk of heart attack. Studies have shown that obesity increases the risk of heart disease.

Dr. According to Rajendra Koju, obesity promotes heart disease. Fat that accumulates in the stomach and body is not only going to hinder the operation of the heart, it also increases the risk of high blood pressure and diabetes. Now the question arises, is there no risk of heart disease for thin people?

‘It is not that skinny people are not at risk of heart disease,’ Dr. Kalika Municipality City Hospital Chitwan medical officer. Sunil Adhikari says, ‘but the cause and risk is greater for the obese, but not for the thin.’ People who smoke, eat sugary foods, don’t have a balanced diet, and are stressed have a high risk of heart disease. Officials say.

Why does obesity increase?

Dr. Rajendra Koju says, ‘Unbalanced eating, excessive eating, uncontrolled eating is one of the main reasons for this.’ Among them, obesity will increase due to hereditary reasons or any disease, he said.

Hormonal imbalance, hypothyroidism, cholesterol can also increase obesity. Age can also be a factor in obesity. As people get older, body fat starts accumulating. The reason for this is that the body’s ability to digest begins to weaken. Doctors say that the body becomes fat when the metabolism becomes weak.

Eating fatty foods, drinking alcohol etc. can also increase obesity.

Controlling obesity reduces the risk of heart disease?

According to Dr. Rajendra Koju, when obesity is controlled, the risk of heart disease also decreases. But this is not a sudden change with obesity reduction, Dr. Koju says, ‘With the control of obesity, the risk of heart disease will gradually decrease.’
