The Election Commission has decided to hold a by-election in Chitwan Region No. 2 on Baisakh 10 (April 23).

Bye-election in Chitwan-2

According to Section 68 of the House of Representatives Election Act, 2074, the meeting of the Election Commission was held on Sunday, Chitwan area no. It was decided to hold a by-election for members of the House of Representatives on 2.

Earlier, Rabi Lamichhane was elected as the chairman of the Rashtriya Swatantra Party (RSP) from Chitwan-2 in the election held on 20 November. However, Lamichhane’s position was removed after the Supreme Court ruled that he renounced Nepali citizenship and took American citizenship and did not complete the process of re-acquiring Nepali citizenship after relinquishing American citizenship.

Provisions related to by-elections are in Section 68 of the House of Representatives Election Act. Where it is said, ‘…if the position of a member elected under the first-come, first-served election system remains vacant for more than six months, the position of a such vacant member shall be filled by by-election on the date specified by the Commission.’ According to this arrangement, the Election Commission has decided to hold by-elections in Chitwan-2 on the 10th Baisakh.
