On Tuesday, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake devastated the Bajura area, utterly uprooting 42 households. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Surya Bahadur Thapa, the relocated households come from three different municipalities: Himali Rural Municipality (15), Gaumul Rural Municipality (15), and Badimalika Municipality (15).

Twelve households in Badimalika, four in Himali, and fourteen in Gaumul are staying with relatives, he added; another five are in tents, and one family has taken refuge in a temple.

According to the District Police Office, the earthquake destroyed around 400 homes. The Badimalika Municipality was hit the most by the quake, according to Thapa.

The dwellings entirely demolished by the quake were 21 in Badimalika, three in Budhinanda, one in Budhiganga, 19 in Himali, 11 in Gaumul, four in Khaptad Chhededaha, one in Swamikartik Khapar Rural Municipality.

One hundred and thirty homes in Badimalika, nine in Budhinanda, nine in Himali, five in Khaptad Chhededaha, and five in Gaumul sustained partial damage.

There were 187 homes in Badimalika, 1 in Budhinanda, 40 in Himali, and 1 in Swamikartik that sustained broad damage.

The quake caused the death of at least one person and many injuries. According to authorities, the dead was Jamuna Rokaya, a resident of Jurile in the Gaumul Rural Municipality-2. As reported by the police, those hurt include Rajdal Bohara from Gaumul-1, Chandra Mahat from Badimalika Municipality-2, Sushrita Thapa, 6, from Himali Rural Municipality-1, and Sarita Nepali, 16 years old.

According to Thapa, 35 sheep belonging to one Amlis at Gaumul-1 were slaughtered in the disaster and the hospital released Bohara, Mahat, and Nepali while the others are seeking treatment at a nearby health post. Collection of the specifics of losses was beginning, said the police.
