The Tamang people all around Nepal held celebrations for Sonam Lhosar today.
According to the Manju Shree calendar, also known as the Tibetan lunar calendar, today marks the beginning of the year 2859, making this celebration the official start of the new year.
Today marks the end of the ‘year of a tiger’ in Tamang culture and the beginning of the ‘year of a hare.’
The first day of the bright half of the lunar month of Magh, known as Magh Shukla Pratipada, is when the celebration takes place.

The Taming community has a tradition of using the signs of 12 different animals to keep track of the passage of time: the rat, the cow, the tiger, the hare, the dragon, the snake, the horse, the sheep, the monkey, the bird, the dog, and the boar.
You’ve got the rat and then you’ve got the boar. According to anthropologist Tika Sherpa, the Tamang people are nature worshippers since they calculate the years using the names of animals.
This festival is celebrated with great pomp and circumstance in the Tamang-majority areas of the Bagmati Province.
Activities commemorating the event have been scheduled throughout the day in the Bouddhanath Area Development Area.
Similarly, Nepal Tamang Ghedung has planned events in the neighborhood Tundikhel over the course of the next three days to celebrate the holiday.
